The school was established in 1968 as a junior high school. During that time the government promoted reforms in education and extended compulsory education from six years to nine years. Students who graduated from neighboring elementary schools entered the school for another three years of formal schooling. On September 21, 1999, a devastating earthquake damaged all the school buildings. Teachers and students had to work and learn in temporary tents and later prefabricated houses. With the help and support of the Tzu Chi foundation, the school managed to be reconstructed after three years. It was also during that period of difficult time the school was converted into a six-year high school, providing further educational opportunities for students. The aim of the school is to build a welcoming and inspiring environment where students are encouraged to share their joy of learning and are valued for their development. The school expects not only excellence in academic achievements but also health and well being in all students.
