Taichung Municipal Siangshang Junior High School was founded in 1968 (Minguo Year 57) as “Taichung City Tenth Junior High School,” with Mr. Lai Da-Nong appointed as the preparatory superintendent. Construction began in April, and in July, Mr. Chen Feng-Miao was designated as the founding principal. The initial classroom facilities were completed, and the first class admission took place in August, with classes formally commencing on September 3 of the same year.
In September 1970 (Minguo Year 59), Mr. Lang Zhi-Yun assumed the role of second principal. On July 1, 1971, the school was renamed Taichung Municipal Siangshang Junior High School. Mr. Chang Zhi-Xue became the third principal on March 1, 1982.
Between 1989 and 1991 (Minguo Years 78–79), the school acquired and re-planned the campus area. During Mr. Chang Da-Tian’s tenure as the fourth principal from February 1990, the school continued its development. In 1991, the athletics field was rebuilt, with the main gate relocated to Meicun Road, and the Siangshang Building and sports court were newly constructed. In 1993, a new multipurpose activity center—Siangshang Hall—was completed, designed by architect Hsiao Yuan-Hui.
By 1995, the school completed construction of a new administration building, significantly enhancing its presence and functionality. In 1996, a school cafeteria and kitchen were established to provide student lunches. In 2000, the campus address was officially changed to No. 389, Sec. 1, Meicun Rd., West District, Taichung City.
In 2001, Mr. Liu Chin-Min was appointed fifth principal and spearheaded the implementation of a 9-year integrated curriculum, cultivating a dynamic and energetic learning environment. In 2004, the Ministry of Education granted the school the "Exemplary 9-Year Curriculum Promoter" award, followed by the "Gold Quality Teaching Excellence" award. Gifted classes were introduced in 2006 to nurture talents in mathematics, science, and languages.
Under Principal Chen Xiu-Li (appointed in 2008), a specialized vocational class launched in 2010. Subsequently, the school initiated reconstruction of aging buildings, culminating in the completion of Siangxin and Siangxue buildings in late 2013, designed by architect Jiang Le-Jing.
The school received a Teaching Excellence Merit award in 2011. In 2014–2015, the school music ensemble earned top distinctions in national competitions, and infrastructure improvements—such as restroom renovations, installation of air conditioning, smart boards, and solar power—enhanced learning environments. Principal Lin Cui-Ru took office in August 2015, continuing school development.
From 2020 to 2021, despite COVID-19 pandemic challenges, the school pivoted to remote learning and still celebrated remarkable achievements in art exhibitions, gifted students’ research awards, volleyball team rankings, and curricular advancements.
In August 2023, Mr. Huang Zhi-Yang began his tenure as the eighth principal, ushering in a new era of growth and vitality for Siangshang Junior High School.
